The BMS Ecostorm Defender is a vortex seperator system designed to seperate grit/floating pollutants, debris and contaminated settling solids from stormwater. The Ecostorm Defender can be used up stream of attenuation/holding ponds as a means of pollutant removal.
The Ecostrom Defender is simple to install and can be used for both new & existing applications. It is delivered 'ready to go' and only requires the connection of the inlet & outlet pipes
The Ecostorm Defender utilises two concentric circular rings of varying diameters. Water levels within the inner and outer cylinders are equalised through
a vertical weir opening. The outer cylinder seperates contaminated particulate from the influent. An inlet pipe with a 90° deflection bend initiates
a counter clockwise flow of stormwater increasing the time it takes for stormwater to enter the weir opening. Floating pollutants such as petroleum and litter
are pushed through the weir into the floatable containment chamber (inner cylinder)
Rainfall generates enough energy to transport pollutants to storm drain inlets where they are then delivered to the inlet of the Ecostorm Defender. A
properly sized system will, on average, introduce stormwater at a flow rate that allows ample detention time to achieve seperation of floatable and settling
contaminants. During a low flow event the system displays two seperate liquid levels. This liquid level differential is a design function of the the weir,
resulting in restricted flow into the equalisation chamber
As rainfall intensity increases, the increased energy allows stormwater runoff to transport heavier materials that have settling velocities that allow
seperation time to decrease as flow rate increases. Typically any floating pollutants and debris are conveyed during routine storm flows. The captured
floating pollutants/debris rise with the internal liquid level.
When a 'design storm' rainfall event is reached the full pollutant load will have been delivered to the Ecostorm Defender. Therefore, the target
pollutants are now seperated and segregated from the stormwater flow and the stormwater will be carrying little or no target pollutants
When a 'peak storm' rainfall event is reached the maximum flow rate or stormwater volume for which each system is hydraulically calibrated to handles will
be passing through the Ecostorm Defender. Project specific hydraulic calibration allows for an accurate prediction of maximum stormwater levels within the
system. Target pollutants separated at lower storm flows are maintained within the system. Internal flow controls and flow patterns prevent pollutant
resuspension and discharge.
Pump out frequency is based on site loading and periodic monitoring of captured pollutant levels in the easy access sediment and floatable containment chambers
